The North Vietnamese Spring-Summer Offensive of 1972, known in America as the Easter Offensive, marked the opening of contemporary warfare while defining the eventual close of the American war in Vietnam. This dissertation examines the campaign at the strategic and operational level, focusing on the strategic decision making of the Nixon administration, the transmission of direction through the chain of command, and its execution on the battlefield. It also builds on a range of new sources on the North Vietnamese war effort, to assess the action-counteraction cycle between the two adversaries.
