FEEDING BEHAVIOR IN MORAY EELS.
MILLER, TRACY JO.
FEEDING BEHAVIOR IN MORAY EELS.
- 54 p.
Source: Masters Abstracts International, Volume: 26-03, page: 0316.
Thesis (M.S.)--Central Michigan University, 1987.
Feeding behavior of three species of muraenid eels were compared. Feeding behavior was divided into two parts: detection-orientation-assessment-capture, and manipulation-feed. Home, search, strike, orient, "M", rotate, knot, shake, release, probe, and feed were mutually exclusive behaviors observed in feeding sequences. Feeding episodes were analyzed by lag sequential analysis which revealed: (1) The feeding sequence is nonrandom. (2) Feeding episodes involving small prey are less complex than sequences involving large prey. Direct observation revealed: (1) The feeding behavior repertoire of E. nebulosa and E. pardalis includes rotation and knotting, while the feeding behavior repertoire of G. zebra includes rotation but does not include knotting. (2) Knotting is utilized when feeding on "large" prey or when resistance is met when pulling on prey. Observations revealed that tactile, chemical, and visual cues elicit and may affect the feeding sequence.Subjects--Topical Terms:
