Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1999.
The dissertation utilizes Marxist theory to show that events within the airline industry are primarily determined by the exigencies of capital reproduction. It takes the reader beyond the mainstream (exogenous) understanding of the airline industry that simply looks at symptomatic events (deregulation, overcapacity, wars bankruptcy laws, fuel prices, etc.) to explain the ups and downs within the industry. The dissertation shows that developments within the airline industry are determined by endogenous laws of motion of capital reproduction. It discusses how agency works within the parameters of an "overdetermined" system and focuses upon the labor theory of value to explain instability within the industry as well as the eroding price of an airline ticket. It also shows how the industry responds to inherent dynamics of capital reproduction and accumulation through not only its negotiations with labor (concessions) but also through the transformations in the work place (downsizing and reengineering) and its spatial practices (the domination and appropriation of airline space).
