This dissertation takes an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the spate of domestic airline mergers that occurred throughout the world in the late 1980s. Using three disciplines--economics, political science and international relations--allows examining the domestic-airline merger phenomenon from different perspectives. The three substantive chapters respond to their respective disciplines, but commonalties exist between the chapters: first, each chapter considers the significance of international determinants behind domestic outcomes, and second, each chapter plays a role in the greater process of integrating these disciplines.

The economic chapter contends that domestic airline mergers were driven by international competitive incentives. Previous research focused on domestic: competitive incentives and neglected the impact of domestic mergers on imperfectly competitive international airline markets. Empirical tests, run on panel data covering international airline markets between twenty-one nations over the 1983-1992 period, indicate that domestic mergers and large domestic networks improve the international competitive position of airlines.

The political science chapter contends that the international competitive effects of domestic airline mergers enhance both private interest pressure and public interest support for lenient antitrust policy--the international economic incentives analyzed and empirically supported in the economic chapter further both private and public interest political forces. Qualitative evidence from the political competition for U.S. airline antitrust policy indicates that international competitive effects enhance the support of both political forces for antitrust approval. These results suggest that the international competitive effects of domestic airline mergers promote the concurrence of political forces that more often clash.

The international relations' chapter contends that the internationalization of the airline industry threatens the autonomy of strict domestic-airline antitrust policy. Two dimensions of airline internationalization are identified: (1) globalization, which refers to international markets becoming more important for airlines; (2) liberalization, which refers to international market deregulation. Empirical tests, based on panel data covering eighteen nations over the 1983-92 period, support globalization undermining domestic-airline antitrust policy autonomy; however, liberalization does not significantly affect antitrust policy. Strict domestic-airline antitrust policy does not appear compatible with the internationalization of the airline industry.
