Thesis (D.Ed.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 2005.
The purpose of this study was to explore, describe and understand the phenomenon of the lived experience of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) in practice who has been educated through a problem-based learning (PBL) approach of education as well as understanding the meaning PBL has had in the current clinical practice of the NP. To do so, it examined how NPs made meaning of their PBL educational experience, how NPs make meaning of the PBL educational experience in their current clinical practice, and how the experience of the PBL approach has or has not contributed to their development as NPs. This was accomplished through the phenomenological inquiry tradition of qualitative research, and the use of in-depth interviews to gather information from thirteen currently practicing NPs. The analysis of the participants meaning of PBL in their education and practice provided evidence that the participants found satisfaction in their current clinical practice related to skills obtained during their PBL experience of being resourceful, independent and self-directed. It was also found that information obtained in the PBL classroom could be directly applied to professional practice and provides the NP with the skills needed to practice clinical decision-making with a holistic viewpoint. The analysis also supports the current research that PBL instills the traits of self-directed learning (SDL) and life long learning (LLL). Finally, the application of the theoretical lens of constructivism revealed that there is a strong connection and building of knowledge between the PBL approach of education and clinical practice for the NP.
