This study was designed to determine the amount of change in respirable dust concentrations that would result from dust control system implementation in a hygiene paper facility. Respirable dust is a health hazard for those who breathe it, yet the literature does not indicate effective ways to control respirable dust levels in this type of facility.

520 $a An exploratory, quasi-experimental pretest, posttest design was used. An engineering and safety team worked with the researcher to gather necessary data, analyze these data, explore solutions to the problem of respirable dust measures above the control limit of 8mug/m3, implement the dust control system chosen to reduce respirable dust levels below the control limit, and analyze post-implementation data.
520 $a The dust control system implemented in this research decreased overall dust levels from 13.59mug/m3 to 4.37mug/m3. Because of the success of the process, the company immediately began using the system in its other facilities.
520 $a Given the growing concern among industries about worker safety, other companies can use the results of this study to decrease the levels of this type of dust and create a less hazardous workplace.
