Traditionally, people who were in need of health care went to hospitals or clinics. The length of stay for individuals in hospitals generally lasted for as long as it took for their complete recovery. However, in the past twenty years there has been a progressive movement to provide health care from acute care settings to community-based centers.

As a result of the changes in the delivery of health care, health care providers needed to become flexible with their clinical practice and acquire new skills. As nurses are an integral component of the health care team, nursing educators also moved some clinical experiences from acute care settings to community-based areas to better prepare students to meet the health care needs of the population.

The impetus of this research is based on the movement of nursing clinical practice to a broader community scope of practice. Evaluation of students is a valuable tool for assessing students' competencies and providing feedback for their growth and development as professional nurses. It was found that there was a void as to whether methods of evaluating students were different in traditional and nontraditional clinical areas. This research was conducted to establish the differences in clinical evaluation methods of baccalaureate nursing students used by nursing faculty in traditional and nontraditional clinical practice areas.

The Bantell Clinical Evaluation Survey was developed to elicit responses from faculty to describe the clinical evaluation methods used in these two clinical areas. This qualitative, descriptive research focused on responses from faculty who taught in the clinical area at baccalaureate programs in the states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The results of this study demonstrated that faculty taught in a variety of clinical areas, both traditional and nontraditional. A larger number of the participants taught in traditional clinical areas. Faculty in this study described numerous models, theories, and methods they used to evaluate students in traditional and nontraditional clinical areas. There were few differences reported in the evaluation methods used in the two areas. Respondents most frequently reported using the same clinical evaluation methods in both traditional and nontraditional clinical areas.
