The stable isotope dynamics of denitrification were investigated via pure culture experiments and simulation modeling. To enable experiments, a chemostat-based reactor was designed and built. Gas collection and cryogenic distillation protocols were also developed. Dissimilatory (i.e. denitrification) and assimilatory nitrogen (N) budgets were kept separate by controlling culture pH. The final system allowed total N recovery between 85 and 115%.
