Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2004.

In my dissertation, a memoir entitled Where I Went Wrong, I am attempting to explore the interlocking oppressions of class and sexuality in my life. Having surveyed many memoirs written about gay men by gay men, I have found that working class issues are often marginalized or completely rendered invisible. This memoir is not motivated by personal catharsis; it is the product of a desire to engage in an intertextual dialogue with such mainstream queer writers like Mark Doty, Paul Monette, Fenton Johnson who maximize the amount of self-reflection in their memoirs in order to justify any action that could be viewed in a negative light. My memoir is structured as a series of overlapping vignettes in order to allow for ambiguities in the reading and to avoid self-justification and in turn middle-class respectability.
