Numerous studies have documented the effects of dams and urbanization on channel capacity and downstream riparian habitat. A great majority of this research, however, has been conducted on large systems. The purpose of this research was to examine if fluvial processes occur at the same temporal scale even though the spatial scale is drastically smaller. The East Fork Little Blue River watershed has a drainage area of 32.8 square miles and is located in an area of persistent urbanization. Three reservoirs have been constructed along its reaches since the 1950's to help control flooding. Data obtained from the U.S. Geological Survey reveal that there has been a lowering of the bed elevation at its gauging station on the East Fork since the closure of Blue Springs Dam in 1986. Examination of stream flow data using the log-Pearson Type III flood frequency analysis and the Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) indicates a substantial alteration to high and low extreme events. Furthermore, mean streambed elevation at the USGS gauging station reveals oscillating degradation and aggradation. As riparian wetlands depend heavily on periodic inundation from adjacent streams, the modification of the hydrologic regime and channel capacity of the East Fork has deleteriously impacted the 100 acres of riparian wetlands downstream of the Blue Springs Dam.
