Thesis (M.S.)--West Virginia University, 2005.
The West Virginia Dairy Quality Assurance Program was established for third party verification after producers completed a workbook (Experiment 1). Removal of mammary gland hair (Experiment 2) by flame-clipping did not affect somatic cell count scores, hair length, or udder scores differently than traditional clipping. Experiment 3 examined addition of seminal plasma (SP) or transforming growth factor-Beta1 (TGF-Beta1) on conception rates. Twelve hours prior to artificial insemination, SP, TGF-Beta1l, or control was infused into the uterus. Trial 1 used 94 cows in spring 2003. Trials 2 and 3 used 364 cows and 194 heifers in spring 2004. Control, TGF-Beta1, and SP conception rates were not significantly different (60.7%, 70.6%, and 78.1% in trial 1 and 57.7%, 44.6%, and 54.3% in Trial 2). Age, treatment and type of estrous synchronization interacted (p = 0.09) to affect conception rates in trial 2. Conception rates of heifers in trial 3 did not differ.
