Web blight (WB), caused by Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk (anamorph: Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn), is an important bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) disease in the hot and humid tropics. At present, bean cultivars with high levels of web blight resistance do not exist, although some have moderate levels of resistance. Recurrent selection (RS) was used to select beans with higher levels of web blight resistance. Advanced lines (F4:6) from the first cycle of recurrent selection (RS) from Puerto Rico and Honduras were evaluated at the Isabela Substation for WB reaction. Twelve lines were selected to initiate the second cycle of RS. The criteria used to select these lines were low levels of leaf damage, high seed yield, low levels of damaged seed and the presence of resistance genes to other important diseases. The crosses with the elite lines were made using a diallel method. The small red lines PR0258-20-2 and PR0258-715-2 had low levels of infection to WB and had bgm-1, I gene, and SAP-6 for resistance to important diseases. In the VIDAC red and black regional performance trials, the lines MH-55-7 and ME-7-19 had mean WB scores of 3.0. In the white and web blight differential trials, PR0309-4 and PR9806-37-2 had the highest level of web blight resistance with mean scores of 3.1 and 3.3, respectively. The most promising lines from these trials were used as parents in the second cycle of RS.
