Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Wyoming, 2001.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of health related variables predicted by Ajzen's theory of planned behavior to influence intent to adhere to hormonal replacement therapy for menopause. The goal was to facilitate understanding of the complex decision of intention to adopt this therapy. If the variables that influence intention were more fully understood, then a holistic model could potentially be developed to facilitate the decision making process. The research question under consideration in this study was: Are the variables of attitude towards menopause management, knowledge of menopause management, social support for menopause management, and self-efficacy for menopause management significantly inter-related with intention to adhere to hormonal replacement therapy for menopause management?

A prospective, exploratory design utilizing convenience sampling of a cohort of 167 peri-menopausal or menopausal women was chosen. Structured questionnaires were selected to measure the variables. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression were performed to analyze the data. Knowledge, support and self-efficacy were shown to predict intent. Self-efficacy was found to predict intent to higher degree than the other variables. The combined influence of knowledge, support, and self-efficacy was found to have a greater impact on intent than any of the variable independently. These findings provide evidence of the value of a holistic approach to assist women in their decision making process concerning hormonal replacement therapy to ease the menopause transition and promote health through the life-span.
