Fibromyalgia syndrome is a multisystemic pain disorder of unknown etiology. Case studies suggest that a carbohydrate-restricted diet ameliorates chronic symptoms and idiopathic postprandial symptoms in fibromyalgia patients (St. Amand & Marek, 1999; Starlanyl & Copeland, 2001). These studies, however, shed no light on the postprandial effects of carbohydrate. This study measured the effects of sucrose in fibromyalgia patients and age-matched controls. EEG, mood, energy, and blood glucose data were collected at five sampling points. ANOVAs for Profile of Mood States (Educational and Industrial Testing Service, 1992) data showed group and time effects, while blood glucose showed time effects. EEG lateral asymmetry scores showed significant time x group interactions for the Alpha 2 band at frontopolar and frontomedial sites, and for 2 channels of Alpha 2 spectral power. These results signal a distinct cortical response for the FMS group, and may arise from greater distress in, and maladaptive coping mechanisms of, the FMS group.
