Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2005.
The current dissertation is an initial attempt to account for an integral, but largely neglected, aspect of social interaction---goal detection. An original theoretical framework is proposed to account for two aspects of goal detection (i.e., goal inferences and inference certainty). Theoretical principles explain how contextual ambiguity and tactical functionality influence the inferences individuals make about others' goals and the certainty individuals have in those inferences. An experimental paradigm was developed in a pilot phase to test the theoretical principles. The hypotheses, derived from the theoretical framework, generally received support in terms of goal inferences, though hypotheses related to inference certainty received less support. Results are discussed with the objectives of reconsidering the theoretical framework, pointing to some limitations, and advancing potential avenues for future research.
