Transfer to seawater (SW) in rainbow trout is accompanied by a period of anorexia. Although the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis is activated in response to SW transfer and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF)-related peptides have hypophysiotropic and anorexigenic properties, the role of the CRF system in appetite regulation during SW acclimation is not known. I examined the effects of SW transfer on food intake, plasma osmolality, HPI axis activity, and forebrain CRF and urotensin I (UI) expression. While SW transfer chronically suppressed food intake over a 2-week period, it transiently increased plasma osmolality and cortisol. Similarly, 24-h after SW transfer, hypothalamic and preoptic area CRF mRNA levels were significantly increased but recovered to pre-transfer levels within 7 days. In contrast, SW transfer elicited a delayed increase in hypothalamic UI mRNA levels and had no effect on preoptic area UI expression.

Because the caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS) is a major source of CRF-related peptides in fish, I examined the effects of SW transfer on CNSS CRF and UI expression. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
