This study compares the costs of landscaping with native versus non-native plants at the San Jose Mercury News campus in San Jose, California. Annual expenses from irrigation, chemicals, plants, labor, and energy were examined for both landscapes over a projected 20 years to determine present value of all costs. Demolition costs of the non-native landscape and implementation of the native landscape are incorporated into the cost-benefit analysis. Wildlife and environmental benefits from native landscapes are addressed non-quantitatively.

The costs of implementation and maintenance of the native landscape in the first four years were higher than the first four years of maintaining the current landscape. However, as the landscape became more self-sustaining, costs associated with the native landscape were significantly reduced. Regardless of higher costs in the first three years, a tremendous cost savings was seen over 20 years with the native landscape, even with the most conservative discount rate.
