Thesis (Ph.D.)--Drew University, 2005.
The relationship between purity of heart and the vision of God is organic, such that those who purify their hearts through single-minded love for God, with the assistance of grace, so transfigure their hearts as to become sharers in divine life partially in the world and fully in heaven. This is the way of perfection towards participation in the Beatific Vision, initiated by the Incarnation of the Son of God and obtained in steps through faith in Him, an upright will, exemplary virtue, suffering, prayer, and almsgiving. Participation in the Beatific Vision involves the whole person; whereby, body and soul are transfigured to contemplate the Trinity and the company of saints as they are in God. The will, acting in freedom through grace, conforms to the will of God, thus effecting a cleansing of the heart that is true, lasting, and habitual. Moved by the will, the faculties cleave to the Supreme Good, the Holy Trinity. The faculty of the heart is the inner person; it is a natural faculty because it is created; however, the fulfillment of human nature is the participation in the Supernatural; whereby, in the Beatific Vision, the heart rests in perfect contemplation within the charity of the Blessed Trinity. Faith is the ground and sustenance of the heart's hope. Faith in Christ compels the heart to conform to His cross by loving God singly with self-emptying love that crucifies the passions of the flesh and imitates Christ's virtues. First among the cleansing virtues is humility. The pristine souls are blessed on earth, for God imparts to them divine life, grace, that the pure in heart may begin to live the Beatific Vision in the world truly, albeit incompletely. The change in the heart is organic, such that it is transfigured, participating in Divine Life as it is being cleansed. The pure in heart will be transfigured wholly, body and soul; thus the whole person will see God face to face and rest eternally in His countenance.
