For Joseph Emerson and Mary Lyon, pioneers in women's education at the beginning of the nineteenth century, their Christian faith was very important. The faith they accepted at a young age eventually developed to influence both their theories regarding female education and their pedagogy in the classroom. Emerson's dedication of Byfield Ladies Seminary in 1822 and Lyon's opening of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1837 signified their reliance on God since Christian principles guided their educational ideas regarding why and how women should be educated. Similarly, the atmosphere of the schools, from religious revivals and teaching of the Bible to curriculum and character formation, enveloped Christianity. Emerson and Lyon invoked faith in all that they did and because of their dedication to women's education hundreds of women were educated in subjects that would serve them both in their positions as wives and mothers and in the life to come.
