The Improvisational Art and Practice of Learning: A Heuristic Study of Adult Learning explores the nature of the experience of entering a situation of uncertainty and transforming it into a situation of learning. Lennard analyzes three major processes that constitute the adult learning experience in unfamiliar, unexpected situations: engaging in social interaction, exploring uncertainties, and experimenting with words and actions in the situation. The first and second sections lay the foundation for this study and examine the literature on adult learning theories that relate to experiential learning, transformative learning and cross-cultural learning. The third section presents the heuristic and arts-based research methods used in this study. It includes excerpts from interviews in which adults describe their learning experiences in situations of uncertainty. Additionally, it presents Lennard's creative synthesis of the findings from these interviews that resulted in the creation of an original performance of writings about uncertainty experienced by homeless and formerly homeless writers. The fourth section presents six dialogic continua that emerged from this study of the learning experience when faced with complexities, uncertainties, ambiguities, and continual change. Six dialogic continua include: (1) participation and detachment; (2) connection and isolation; (3) change and stasis; (4) limitations and strengths; (5) sameness and difference; and (6) success and failure. It then considers three factors that contribute to enhanced performance in such situations: (1) active uncertainty; (2) intention and commitment; and (3) challenge and support. The fifth section summarizes the findings of the study, provides an example of a method that fosters the ability to engage in the dialogic creation of meaning when facing open-ended situations, and specifies limitations of the study and future directions for research.
