Activity-based modelling and microsimulation are two principles behind recent developments in transportation demand analysis. In place of conventional, aggregate and sequential models it has been proposed to simulate the evolution of an entire urban space over a defined period of time operating at a highly disaggregated level by representing individual agents (people, households, vehicle, and establishments) and operating on a 100% sample. The microsimulation system updates the demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the population with time: endogenously (aging, births, deaths, etc.) and exogenously (migration). It is assumed that demand for travel is derived from the need to participate in certain out-of-home activities. Scheduling behaviour and the participation in out-of-home activities is explicitly modeled for each individual, and based on this travel, demand is derived.

This thesis is one of the few works known to the author that examines the behavioural foundations of scheduling and re-scheduling processes. Recently collected process data with the use of a newly developed computerized household activity scheduling survey tool was used to analyze behavioural mechanisms responsible for individual decision-making processes. Agenda formation and conflict resolving between competing activities have been incorporated in a proposed integrated event-driven time-series based on a conceptual framework of decision-making processes that has been inspired by the philosophy of time, proposed by Sir John McTaggart. This proposed approach for activity-based modelling provisions is not only used for unifying short-term decision-making, but also provides extra dimensionality for integrating long-term interactions of all other behavioural modules within the Integrated Land-Use, Transportation, and Environment (ILUTE) Modelling System.
