Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Union Institute, 2001.

The current study included an adapted and updated replication of Robert Fulton's historic study, Attitudes of clergymen toward funerals and funeral directors in the United States: A 1959 Study. The researcher utilized Fulton's 1959 variables as a basis for a contemporary study of attitudes of primary thanostic care providers who attended a regional symposium in Pikesville, Maryland on October 21, 1999. The current study was stimulated by the fact little research on the topic had been accomplished since Fulton's original study. The current study includes a comprehensive review of the literature which explicates the changes in thanostic attitudes and practices in the past 40 years. The current data were analyzed and recommendations were made. The recommendations are aimed at enhancing the collegiality and cooperation of funeral service providers, clergy and cemetarians.
