Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
This study investigated the variable of unresolved grief in children due to the death of a parent or parents, and explored whether unresolved grief manifests into delinquent behaviors. The growing body of research on bereaved children to date suggests that several background characteristics of the child, the deceased parent(s), and the family may affect the process and outcome of a child's grief. If left unsettled, this unresolved grief could generate antisocial or outright criminal behaviors. While most individuals experience some kind of loss during their lifetimes, the loss of a parent or parents during childhood represents a particularly profound psychological insult to children's social and emotional development. A comprehensive and critical review of the scholarly and peer-reviewed literature together with a qualitative meta-analysis to examine relevant studies concerning these issues identified a number of effective clinical interventions and therapeutic techniques that can help bereaved children. Better therapeutic interventions for this population may reduce the propensity for delinquency and self-destructive behaviors and enable these individuals to live healthy, productive lives today and in the future.
