This study examined the extent to which professional development/teacher training affects nursing candidates' satisfaction with their preparation as evidenced by course evaluation results. The study is a comparison of student evaluation of teaching effectiveness and resulting student satisfaction with instructors who had had teacher training and professional development and those who had not. The study looks at both public and private (proprietary) schools that deliver basic nursing programs. The research questions were the following: (1) What are the effects of professional development on nursing faculty classroom evaluations as evidenced by levels of satisfaction by their students (nursing candidates)? (2) What are the similarities and differences reflected in student ratings of instructors when instructors' ages, experience, and amount and type of professional development are considered? (3) To what extent do the selected demographics of nursing students affect their satisfaction with their course instructors? (4) To what extent do teacher effectiveness scores on the self-assessment instrument correlate with student satisfaction with their course instructors?

Causal-comparative research was used to compare the end-of-course student ratings of instructors who had had formal teacher training courses with those of instructors who had not had formal teacher training courses. Data analysis showed that education courses had an impact on the instructors' self-assessments of their effectiveness as well as on student satisfaction.

Major findings were that (a) education courses gave the instructor a slight edge, especially in the areas of classroom management and the use of a variety of teaching methods to disseminate knowledge to the students; and (b) students recognized these skills and this increased their satisfaction, as reflected in student ratings of instructors.

It was recommended that (a) a teaching course be required for all nursing instructors during their first year of employment; (b) instructors set yearly professionals goals in the areas of classroom instruction and professional development; (c) instructors participate in ongoing in-service training to provide professional development that will encourage improvement in classroom skills; and (d) instructors be encouraged to pursue formal education and advanced degrees to better qualify them to train the nurses of the future.
