The urban landscape can be read as records of the changing intentions of human beings over the years. Communities can form an attachment to a space when its origin is recognizable and understood. This research creates and applies a framework for evoking the past on an urban site.

520 $a From a review of the literature on heritage and meaning, and the analysis of case studies chosen for their significant ideas on the evocation of the past, two sets of criteria for historically-inspired design were developed. The first set focuses on form, function and emotional values. It allows meaning to develop through time and use and opens up the site for the development of its naturally evolved meaning. The second set includes heightening awareness of its historical traces and adding design elements. It allows for a designed meaning inspired by the history of the site. The Loretto Convent in Guelph, Ontario, was chosen for a design demonstration site because it is an architectural and historical landmark. These criteria for historically inspired design may be used as guidelines when designing on sites rich in history.
