Many research projects about adolescent sexuality in the United States have been quantitative, focusing on collecting statistics on sexual behavior, sources of sexuality information, and effectiveness of sexuality education programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to consider the views of adolescents who participated in a sexuality course. The central question of this study was: What is the adolescent perspective about what they learned in a sexuality education course?

Many research projects about adolescent sexuality in the United States have been quantitative, focusing on collecting statistics on sexual behavior, sources of sexuality information, and effectiveness of sexuality education programs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to consider the views of adolescents who participated in a sexuality course. The central question of this study was: What is the adolescent perspective about what they learned in a sexuality education course?

Data for the study were provided by 25 male and female high school students in an elective Family and Consumer Science course in southern Wyoming. The students kept journals throughout the course about their attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions about sexuality and the classroom activities. Open-ended questions were asked at the beginning and end of each of the three major units on human reproduction, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual health issues, and dating and relationship issues. An abstinence-based sexuality education program, S.E.X.-Self-Esteem and X, Y Hormones, was used to stimulate discussion. Journal entries were analyzed for themes about the students' perceptions of sexuality and the course's relevance for them.

The journal entries indicated that at this critical stage of physical and social development, students had many questions and were eager to learn more about their sexuality. The diversity of knowledge, experiences, and attitudes within the class created opportunities for discussion and helped students learn from each other's experiences while processing the information under the guidance of an experienced educator.

The students' journal entries revealed how an abstinence-based education works in helping them make responsible sexuality decisions---whether to be abstinent or to be sexually involved. Students also identified qualities they appreciated in a teacher of sexuality education. These perceptions about sexuality and sexuality education can help educators gain insight about how to simultaneously address health concerns and help students develop healthy, responsible sexuality attitudes and behaviors.

The journal entries also included messages that the students wanted to convey to the community and local school board about the value of having a course in which they could receive accurate sexuality information. The appendices include copies of the activities used in the course.
