"Notion and categories of space in contemporary sculpture: settings, spatial interaction and work of art" is structured in four sections which, from the beginning, aim to clarify the concept of space in works of art which are free from rules and traditional regulations. These works make use of---or pervert---that notion in accordance with their personal plastic strategies.

In section I, we try to define the level of importance involved by space, spatial singularity, in modern works of art, by considering it as an artistic element itself, specially in sculpture.

Section II includes a reflection on the consequences resulted from giving up traditional methods and materials in sculpture---its transformation into artistic object and its subsequent insertion in settings which might reinforce or contradict its aesthetic status. Likewise, this section analyses the duality space/sculpture, the art place, as a means of communication/exhibition, since this might become an aesthetic determining factor to value a work of art in plastic terms.

In section III, we study some contemporary proposals which stimulate a new perspective in relation to art and its fundamental prerogatives. Ever since the dadaist resolutions or the environmental art in the sixties, it is required an analysis of the modern sculptor's incursions---or the painter's---in a type of art inscribing and codifying its particular plastic options by means of the configuration of a total space (installations) . This analysis should put forward, even if tangentially, the peculiarities of a new plastic writing which erects its discourse in a space articulated by the quaintness of objects and materials. Its gestation may take place from the most basic materials of povera art, to the latest and most sophisticated technology, for instance laser.

Finally, section IV analyzes the most eye-catching aspects of some plastic initiatives placed in certain outstanding locations. From our point of view, they show to a large extent the spatial singularity and the eventual interaction taking place between works of art and their most genuine settings.
