This paper explores the nature and characteristics of learning organizations to the extent that they may result in creating more effective organizations composed of individuals focused around common goals. The meaning of learning organizations is provided by definitions, a survey of contemporary literature on the subject, and an exploration of organizations engaged in major change initiatives. Leadership of the learning organization is seen to differ significantly from traditional organizational leadership in that the leader is a teacher, mentor and principle-centered leader. Particular emphasis is placed on the need for this new leadership paradigm within the learning organization, following an exploration of traditional leadership definitions. Contributing factors to creating a learning organization are identified, as well as steps that might be taken to create a learning organization.
