Thesis (Ph.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2005.
This dissertation is an inquiry of seven peoples' experiences with gleaning wisdom, insight and knowledge from and through their own bodies. The question this dissertation asks is, "What wisdom is revealed through the stories of people who listen to their body's knowing?" The research methodology used for this inquiry is Organic Inquiry, which honors the hearts, minds and spirits of the co-researchers. Using storytelling as the method, co-researchers share their inner subjective story of body knowing with the primary researcher, in a sacred context. The primary researcher cycles through the co-researchers' stories using her own story as a lens for meaning making and applies skills from another methodology, Intuitive Inquiry. The skills borrowed from intuitive inquiry include ritualizing intention, reflective listening, indwelling and trickstering.

This study was catalyzed by the primary researcher's body-as-worldview paradigm. Six co-researchers who were observed to share a similar capacity were invited to participate in this inquiry exploration. Although the co-researchers are seemingly eclectic and diverse, they each reflect an aspect of the primary researcher's life.

In keeping with the spirit of organic inquiry, the primary researcher has asked the readers to engage themselves fully and interactively with the text. Such reciprocal participation acknowledges the presence and role of the reader in witnessing the co-researchers' stories, while fostering an embodied learning experience for the reader.

This inquiry is embedded in the larger field of transformative learning, which appreciates the exploration and expression of various epistemologies (ways of knowing) and ontologies (ways of being). The primary researcher synthesizes the literature on body knowing with the themes she discovered. (1) Our interconnectivity (the connectivity between all sentient beings) with all of life on the planet which recognizes that our individuated bodies are merely a part of a larger whole. (2) Our capacity for being present in our bodies, and in the present through our bodies. (3) Our somatic wisdom, which guides our attention to our body's wisdom and infinite capacities.

This inquiry concludes by revisiting the initial query through a more learned and experienced body, which has come to revere storytelling/story sharing as an imperative component to healing the dichotomous split that tends to occur in western epistemology.
