This dissertation focuses on the link between Genet's theatre and his essay on Giacometti, L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti. Genet is fascinated by the sense of space that Giacometti constructed in his sculptures and drawings, which he calls "solitude." L'Atelier d'Alberto Giacometti celebrates the freedom of each individual to carve out a space for himself or herself. Genet shares Giacometti's goal of giving absence a visible presence on the page and on stage. Both artists believed that a hidden reality could be found by focusing on individual faces. Genet emphasizes an aesthetic way of looking at objects; spectators must separate objects from their surroundings in order to appreciate their unique beauty. By looking at objects with respect, spectators may catch a glimpse of the invisible made visible.

Chapters two and three concentrate on the similarities and differences between Genet's essay and his major plays, Le Balcon and Les Negres. I compare the actors on Genet's stage to Giacometti's statues. I also highlight the differences between the solitude that Genet discovers in the works of Giacometti and the characters' struggle for solitude in his plays. In the second part of my dissertation, I argue that Genet's theatre and his novels can be compared to Artaud's "Theatre of Cruelty," since his characters are moved by forces that they cannot control. As in the theatre of cruelty, Genet's actors often become signs for social forces instead of portraying an individual's psychology. Just as Artaudian theatre eliminates the distinction between the stage and the auditorium by surrounding the audience on all sides, Genet's plays create a confrontational meeting space between actors and spectators. I argue that by reconfiguring space in this way, Genet's plays speak directly to their spectators.
