I examined variably-saturated groundwater flow in two hydrogeologic settings: layered hillslope deposits and stratified fluvial deposits, using a combination of field observations and numerical modeling with Richards' equation.

In February, 1983, an intense rainstorm triggered a shallow, rapid slump/debris-flow on a monitored hillslope of coastal central California. Discontinuous records of rainfall and maximum groundwater levels within the slide mass were collected before and after the event. These water levels show the development of a shallow perched water table in soil overlying an older, low permeability landslide deposit. The slope failure occurred in an area of localized groundwater buildup, the cause of which was not apparent from field observations. Using variably-saturated groundwater modeling, I investigated the pre-failure hillslope hydrology and demonstrated a possible cause of the localized groundwater buildup. Simulations indicate that only a slight decrease in soil hydraulic conductivity would have been needed to create the observed buildup.

Unsaturated, stratified sediments beneath intermittent stream channels affect groundwater recharge from these streams. Using four different cases of sediment stratification, I simulated transient transient, 2-D, variably-saturated flow between the stream and the underlying water table. The sediment permeability greatly affects the timing and rate of channel loss and groundwater recharge, while the geometry of low permeability sediments controls flow patterns and the style of stream/water table connection. In cases with homogeneous sediments and narrow, low permeability lenses, stream/water table connection occurs by a saturated column advancing from above. In cases with low permeability streambed sediments and extensive, low permeability layers, connection occurs by a water table mound building from below. I also compared results from two simplified models, a Darcian seepage equation and the Green-Ampt infiltration equation, with those from our 2-D simulations. Simplified models appear to perform well in cases with homogeneous and low permeability streambed sediments. In cases with low permeability lenses or layers, the simplified models require fitted parameters to perform well.
