Because of its literary artistry, the book of Ruth has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent years. A review of the literature demonstrates that in most cases the interpretation of the book depends primarily upon the historical reconstruction of some element of the story, such as sex roles and legal procedure. Although dialogue constitutes the majority of the book, the linguistic aspects and literary shape of the characters' speech have thus far gone unexamined.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In this project, the examination of the dialogues using principles from literary theory and tools from linguistics builds the foundation for determining the contours of character speech in the book. The syntactic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic aspects of the dialogues demonstrate a marked similarity to actual conversation. Variations in these linguistic aspects of the speeches correlate closely with variations in the identity of the speaker, the hearer, and other aspects of the context of the speech event. These correlations indicate not only a remarkable complexity and sophistication in the representation of character dialogue but also the use of stereotypes. Current research in sociolinguistics also strongly supports the existence of these stereotypical linguistic beliefs, suggesting the potential for further examination of ideological aspects of texts that feature fictional dialogue.

Ideologically, stereotypes in the characters' speech contribute to the construction of age, ethnicity, and especially gender in the book of Ruth. The subtle construction of these social distinctions in the story produces the text's dominant reading, that reading which the text appears to self-select. In this case, the linguistic aspects of the dialogues support the existence of a dominant reading that Ruth is an ideal woman whose social place is one of assimilation and even anonymity in submission to a patriarchal society. The reader has the choice, of course, to accept or resist this reading.
