This study employs a comparative approach using biographical, historical, sociological, and psychosexual analyses to examine the works and lives of two exilic writers of different genders and from disparate time periods, political settings, and nationalities. Manuel Puig left Argentina in 1973 during a climate that progressed into what became known as the "dirty war" and Sylvia Plath entered adulthood during the McCarthy Era in the 1950s and lived in England during the Cold War in the 1960s. Both lived during times and in places where censorship was imposed on many levels and normative behavior was strongly enforced through multiple means. Culturally situated in the margins of their societies, Plath and Puig critiqued the status quo from a perspective that was vested in breaking down the societal structures that stifled them personally and professionally, but were at once connected intimately with and defined by those structures.
