Thesis (Ph.D.)--Loyola University Chicago, 2005.
The current study investigated psychological distress among African American counseling center clients in an effort to examine within group differences. Variables of gender, educational level, and marital status were also examined in relation to psychological distress. In a sample of 547 undergraduate and graduate students at a elite, southern, predominately White institution, results revealed that 63% of African American students were considered psychologically distressed. Of the problem concerns African American students most frequently endorsed, schoolwork/grades, depression, anxiety, adjustment to the university, and relationship with family were the top five. No significant differences between clinically distressed vs. less distressed student were found with regard to demographic variables. Lastly, there was a significant difference between clinically distressed and less distressed students in rate of change, with clinically distressed students showing greater improvement over from pre to post therapy. Limitation of the study, implications for clinical practice, and directions for future research are offered.
