Attachment differences and value orientation of collectivism and individualism are concepts that have been widely researched in psychology, yet little research has been done to understand how these variables impact college adjustment among women with diverse backgrounds. This study examined how attachment patterns and collectivism and individualism effected college adjustment among 95 first year college students with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Collectivism and individualism were measured using an instrument that was developed for this study by utilizing 15 collectivism and individualism items identified by Oyserman, et al. (2002) and implementing a Likert scale to each item. Attachment pattern was measured using the Parental Attachment Questionnaire (PAQ) developed by Kenny (1985). College adjustment was assessed by using the Student Adjustment to College Questionnaire (SACQ) developed by Baker and Syrik (1984). Significant correlations were revealed between key variables of the study and stepwise regression analyses provided partial support for the hypotheses. A MANOVA revealed main effects for key variables of the study. Findings of this study have implications for the development of culturally sensitive interventions targeting college adjustment among female students with diverse backgrounds.
