The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychosocial adjustment and social support and symptom distress, among Brazilian women receiving post surgical treatment for breast cancer. The theoretical framework was provided by Lazarus and Folkman's theory on stress and coping (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The sample consisted of 120 Brazilian women receiving post-surgical treatment for breast cancer. Based on the theoretical rational two hypotheses were formulated: (1) There will be positive relation between perceived social support and psychosocial adjustment among Brazilian women receiving post surgical adjuvant therapy for breast cancer, and (2) There will be an inverse relationship between symptom distress and psychosocial adjustment among Brazilian women receiving post surgical adjuvant therapy for breast cancer. Clinical data were collected from the patient's physician to check the inclusion criteria of the study. Those with advanced breast cancer were excluded. Participants were recruited among the women who volunteered for the study, from three hospitals in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Psychosocial Adjustment was measured by the Psychosocial Adjustment to Breast Cancer Factor of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (Derogates, 1983). Social support was measured by the Social Support Network Inventory (Flaherty et al., 1983), and symptom distress by the Symptom Distress Scale (McCorkle & Young, 1978).

Hypotheses were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. The two hypotheses were supported. Additional analyses of interest were performed. Implications for nursing practice in Brazil and recommendations for future study are made. The results add to the literature contributing to an understanding of the psychosocial adjustment of Brazilian women with breast cancer and its relation with social support and symptom distress.
