Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1996.
How does perspective (one's outlook, stance, way of regarding, or "attitude") influence our understanding of stories? One line of research bearing on this question is reviewed. Initiated by Anderson and Pichert (1978; Pichert & Anderson, 1977), it is described here as the "perspective manipulation paradigm." To extend this research, a general framework for studying story understanding is introduced by making two distinctions: between two classes of perspectives, and between two classes of tasks for assessing story understanding. A "viewpoint" perspective orients a story understander to consider a story from some position, often that of one of the characters in that story; a "genre" perspective orients a story understander to consider a story within some particular framework. The two classes of tasks are recall of the story's propositions ("propositional recall") and interpretation. The perspective manipulation paradigm focuses upon the effect of viewpoint on propositional recall, and is suggested to represent a special case within this broader framework of story understanding.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The perspective manipulation paradigm focuses upon the effect of viewpoint on propositional recall, and is suggested to represent a special case within this broader framework of story understanding.

The goal of this dissertation is to establish that these two classes of perspectives have different kinds of effects in story understanding. Three hypotheses are proposed. The "Viewpoint" hypothesis predicts that viewpoints affect propositional recall, but not interpretation. The "Genre" hypothesis predicts that genres affect interpretation, but not propositional recall. Finally, the "Perspective Independence" hypothesis predicts that viewpoints and genres are independent effects, and do not interact. The results of overall analyses confirm all three hypotheses.

Subsequent analyses elaborate and clarify these results. In Chapter 4, the effect of viewpoint on propositional recall is shown to replicate the traditional perspective manipulation paradigm pattern of results; a modest effect is found for genre. In Chapter 5, within the field of interpretive effects examined, genres are shown to have pervasive effects on interpretation; negligible effects are found for viewpoints. Overall, the results of this dissertation support the claim that a genre perspective provides a wider perspectival frame than a viewpoint perspective, having effects that extend beyond recall. The research also demonstrates that how a story is interpreted, contrary to some critics, is accessible to rigorous empirical study.
