Accurate perception and control of the direction of locomotion is essential for human observers to navigate successfully in the world. This task can be easily achieved when the observer is traveling on a straight path in a rigid environment with no eye, head, or body movements. However, it often happens that the observer takes his eyes off the goal and looks at an object off to one side, e.g., the observer fixates an obstacle and tries to steer to avoid it. Under this circumstance, what information do humans use to perceive and then control the direction of heading? The goal of the thesis is to answer this question. The experiments I present systematically evaluate various sources of visual information for heading perception and for active control of steering during translation and rotation. The results indicate that heading perception and active control of steering rely on similar visual information. The current hypotheses for the sources of visual information are motion parallax, static depth and reference objects in the simulated environment in the display. The findings suggest that heading perception and active control of steering might share a common underlying mechanism---an inseparable perception-action system.
