The graying of America presses the issue of providing adequate services to older adults. Traditionally an underserved group, the growing numbers of older adults in the United States will place a greater demand upon professionals to meet their needs. The mental health needs of older adults, defined here as adults age 65 and older according to convention, in particular, deserve public attention. Older adults and mental health providers alike will benefit from public education and advocacy efforts to promote the mental health and wellbeing of older adults. Because all individuals can expect to be part of the older adult group eventually, education and advocacy benefits the whole of society. This dissertation highlights current efforts to educate and advocate for the mental health of older adults. Barriers to accessing and receiving mental health services and treatment are also discussed. In addition, a set of proposed guidelines for developing a national campaign to promote awareness of the mental health and wellness of older Americans is introduced. An appendix of selected resources for mental health and aging public education and advocacy is included as a vehicle for raising awareness and disseminating information about relevant programs.
