The elderly population has the highest rate of depression and suicide in the United States. Studies demonstrate that homecare services to the elderly can help increase life satisfaction. The problem addressed is that the literature does not clearly state if or how homecare services affects life satisfaction of homebound elderly individuals living alone in the community who lack consistent informal supports. The research question involved the exploration of the impact of homecare services on the emotional functioning, well-being, and cognitive perceptions of homebound elderly individuals living alone in the community. A phenomenological case study design was used in which the researcher interviewed 7 participants in the Senior Adult Independent Living (SAIL) program and 3 participants who were not participating in this program. Themes that emerged included the need expressed by these older adults for (a) reassurance, (b) connection to others, (c) a sense of control, (d) confidence that they could contact a case manager if necessary, (e) confidence the program would help them meet reasonable daily living expectations, and (f) confidence that someone cared for their welfare. These results support the continued inclusion of trained case managers in meeting the needs of the elderly. While the results of this study can not be directly applied to the entire elderly population, they could be used to prompt public policy debate regarding the best use of available resources to meet the needs of the elderly. As the absolute and relative numbers of elderly people in the U.S. population increase, society will have to address their concerns. The implications for social change include the need to maintain case management as an integral part of care services for the elderly, thus allowing the elderly to live independently as long as possible.
