Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2005.
This dissertation examines the importance of political and social knowledge as discussed by Delli Carpini, Schudson, Putnam, Yankelovich and others, and argues that knowledge is of utmost importance to civic health and democracy. The lack of political knowledge, specifically among less educated groups, is not conducive to representative democracy, where solidarity can be considered a prerequisite for effective representation.

The connections between knowledge and media have been addressed in the field of mass communication. Tichenor, Donohue, and Olien submitted the "knowledge gap" concept in 1970 and suggested five factors to explain why mass media fail to inform the whole public and instead inform only those in high socioeconomic subgroups.1

Evidence presented in this study supports the hypothesis that the Internet may in fact mitigate several of the underlying factors identified by Tichenor et al., and the hypothesis holds even after appropriate demographics controls are introduced by stratification.
