The purpose of this study is to examine some of the factors assumed to influence the belief in the justifiability of suicide in China. The unusual gender ratio of suicide in China suggests that we might find a gender difference in the determinants of the belief of the justifiability of suicide.

Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relative effects of variables such demographics, family ties, physical and psychological health, life satisfaction, and values reflecting individualism, conservatism, and religiosity on the belief in the justification of suicide. The results do not confirm the expected gender difference, yet do point toward the associated factors that explain the variation in the belief in the justifiability of suicide for both gender groups. Such associated factors are the presence of children in the household, physical and emotional well being, life satisfaction, engagement in prayer, and the degree of individualism.
