This study examined board competencies and their affect on board governance in Family Outreach of America, Incorporated. The study focused on the roles and responsibilities of the board, how board competencies were acquired, how board competencies were assessed, what factors impeded the cultivation of board competencies, and what factors facilitated the cultivation of board competencies. A questionnaire designed to measure board competencies was used to determine the state of board competencies. This was followed by a period in which board proceedings were observed, board members were interviewed, and organizational documents examined. The theory underpinning the study was that board competencies were essential for effective governance. Previous research by Chait, Holland, and Taylor (1993) found that strong nonprofit boards exhibited six characteristics and behaviors that set them apart from weaker boards. These six characteristics and behaviors were identified as board competencies and they formed the theoretical constructs for the study. Quantitative and qualitative research techniques were used to arrive at the findings. The findings of the study revealed that the board of Family Outreach of America was under-performing. It had not developed its board competencies to enable it to govern at the level commensurate with the needs of the organization.
