Color constancy refers to the fact that the color appearance of an object remains relatively stable despite changes in the light reaching the eye from that object. A common reason for changes in reflected light is due to changes in the illumination. Although there has been a lot of research examining this type of constancy, it is still an open question whether constancy is better for some types of illumination change. In particular this dissertation work addresses whether constancy is better for naturally occurring illumination changes. The visual system also appears to be constant across changes in mutual reflections. However, this type of constancy has not received much attention and my dissertation examines this type of constancy in more detail. It would also be interesting to know if these two types of constancy involve the same visual processes. To address these questions, scenes were rendered using the Radiance graphics package coupled with custom software that ensured colorimetric accuracy. The scenes were displayed on a CRT-based stereoscope and observers made adjustments to colors embedded in the scene. The results showed that constancy does vary depending on the type of illuminant change and is best for a common naturally occurring illuminant change in the 'blue' direction. Constancy for mutual reflection shows a similar pattern but the level of constancy is lower. This is likely to be because mutual refection changes are local whereas illumination changes tend to be global. The data from a third experiment which directly compared the two types of constancy suggest that the same visual processes are used for both.
