Performance Pedagogy is rooted in the African and African American ritual traditions of integrating the performing arts with everyday life to teach, sustain, and encourage individuals and the community. Performance Pedagogy utilizes the performing arts as an educational tool. It is the integration of the performing arts with conventional academic subjects with the intent of teaching through performance. Performance Pedagogy principles are utilized to inculcate personal and social empowerment and intellectual development through the facilitation of cognitive, social, and artistic learning. Performance Pedagogy supports educational learning based on Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and their intersection with traditional and non-traditional learning styles. Performance Pedagogy provides a framework for these learning styles and intelligences and suggests manifold ways of teaching through them. It may be taught to teachers and others interested in using the performing arts as a mechanism for educating youths and adults. Performance Pedagogy combines performance sensibilities, concepts, and strategies with the knowledge and skills that teachers already possess, enabling them to integrate performing arts instruction with the teaching of academic subjects. As a result, students develop skills and understandings in the performing arts while enhancing their foundation of scholastic knowledge.

In the illustrative performance, Performance Pedagogy is used as a tool for teaching African American musical history. The traditions of African American performing arts (music, drama, and dance---or song, ritual, and ritualistic dance), serve as pedagogical tools to frame and illuminate the historical and cultural landscapes of African Americans. The interdisciplinary performance corrects many popular misconceptions and enlightens audiences about the numerous contributions African Americans have made to United States and world cultural forms.
