Health professionals have begun to propose physical activity guidelines for children. Examples of these guidelines include that children should be active for at least 60 minutes, and up to several hours, per day; or that girls accumulate 11,000 steps per day while boys accumulate 13,000 steps. By providing these guidelines and recommendations, these organizations have essentially begun to promote specific goals of physical activity for children. However, there is little little, if any, research that has empirically established the most effective way to set goals for children. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether children who set goals to increase their steps by a percentage of their pretest step count (relative goals group) or absolute number (absolute goals group) would show a greater increase in steps over a five-week time period than children who set no goals. Two hundred and thirty-two 4th and 5th grade female children participated in a 5-weeks study consisting of one week of pretest data collection, 3 weeks of intervention, and one week of post data collection. Schools were randomly placed into one of three conditions. Results indicated that there were significant differences found between the relative goals group and control group, as well as between the absolute goals group and control group from pretest to posttest. There were no significant differences found between the absolute goals group and the relative goals group from pretest to posttest. Based on these results it was determined that goal setting has an impact on children's physical activity.
