This study examined the relationships between tourists' unconscious needs for achievement, affiliation and power and their preferences for adventure, culture, business, and escape tours. Data were collected from 140 students at the University of Utah via an online questionnaire. Seven Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) pictures prompted respondents to create 980 related stories. These unconscious needs for achievement, affiliation, and power were scored from these stories. The four null hypotheses were that first, no significant relationship exists between the need for achievement and a preference for an adventure tour; second, no significant relationship exists between the need for affiliation and a preference for a culture tour; third, no significant relationship exists between the need for power and a preference for a business tour; and finally, no significant relationship exists between the need for power and a preference for an escape tour.

The relationships between the two sets of variables were examined through canonical variate analysis. The rotated structure matrix was examined to interpret the variate pairs. The first pair of variates revealed a very strong relationship between two of the motive variables (the need for achievement [.708] and the need for affiliation [-.639]) and two travel preferences (adventure tour [.650] and culture tour [-.586]), respectively. Two strong relationships were detected: one between the need for achievement and a preference for an adventure tour; and the other between the need for affiliation and a preference for a culture tour. This study contributes to the application of the theory of motivation, pioneered by McClelland's research within human psychology and its relationship to travel preferences, explored by Ralston in travel literature.
