Thesis (M.A.)--University of South Alabama, 2000.
Many studies have demonstrated the benefits of good communication between doctors and patients, but few have focused on the perceptions of doctor-patient communication and its impact on the doctor-patient relationship (Gorney, 1998; Sharf, 1984; Stewert, 1995; Annandale, 1996). This study reveals medical student perceptions regarding doctor-patient communication and its effects, both positive and negative, on the doctor-patient relationship. To conduct this investigation, a survey of medical students was performed. The medical students in this study have not been formally introduced to as communication skills while in medical school. Results of the survey indicate that medical students identify a strong relationship between doctor-patient communication and concepts such as patient satisfaction and complaints. The perception that good communication can thwart the possibility of medical malpractice was also identified. In addition, this study revealed that while many medical students perceive a future possibility of medical malpractice for themselves, they consider a colleague's risk to be substantially higher. This study also found that while the importance of communication skills was recognized, the importance of teaching communication skills to medical students and physicians was not considered to be very important.
