Accurate speech perception requires processing information across multiple acoustic dimensions simultaneously. This is an investigation of the neurophysiologic mechanisms underlying processing of pitch and phonetic dimensions of speech as reflected by cortical auditory event-related potentials. Sets of stimuli varying along dimensions of pitch and place of articulation (termed "place") were synthesized. Behavioral and electrophysiologic results were obtained to a change in either the pitch or place dimensions of the identical stimulus. Of particular interest was representation of: (1) a pitch change occurring in the context of random place variations; (2) a place change occurring in the context of random pitch variations. This investigation had complementary behavioral and neurophysiologic components.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A behavioral speeded-discrimination experiment revealed that subjects' discrimination of pitch was largely unaffected by irrelevant variations in place. However, subjects' discrimination of place was significantly slowed down by irrelevant variations in pitch. This pattern of asymmetric interference is indicative of distinct cognitive processes being involved in the analysis of pitch and place information.

The same stimuli were used to investigate whether the MMN would reflect the pre-cognitive neural processes that underlie the asymmetric behavioral processing interaction. The MMN results showed that identical stimuli presented in different contexts elicited distinct neurophysiologic responses. Specifically, the MMN elicited by place changes occurring in the context of random pitch variations was smaller than the MMN elicited by pitch changes occurring in the context of random place variations. The pattern of MMN results was consistent with behavioral findings demonstrating that irrelevant pitch variations interfere to a greater extent with place discrimination than vice-versa. The MMN results also revealed hemispheric differences that were consistent with unique roles for the right and left hemispheres in pitch and phonetic perception respectively. This study demonstrates that the context within which stimuli occur evokes distinct neurophysiologic processes which constitute a neural basis for behavioral processing interactions that occur during multidimensional speech perception.
