The anatomy of leaf, stem, and root of plants of 100 taxa in the orchid subtribe Dendrobiinae was studied and described from the viewpoint of systematics. Included in this investigation were 2 sections and 5 species in Cadetia, 24 sections and 88 species (also 1 natural hybrid) in Dendrobium, and 6 species in Pseuderia. The broad diversity of vegetative morphological variation in Dendrobiinae is reflected in the correspondingly wide vegetative anatomical diversity. Tilosomes (both spongy and lamellate) above the passage cells of the exodermis are reported for the first time in Dendrobiinae (even though they are usually absent); spongy tilosomes are considered plesiomorphic in Dendrobiinae. Tenuous scalariform wall thickenings in dead exodermal cells are described for the first time from this group and are present in all taxa except Pseuderia. Stegmata containing spherical silica bodies characterize the subtribe, but are absent in Pseuderia. Water-storage cells in leaves and/or stems of many taxa in Dendrobiinae are considered derived. These are of 2 basic types: (1) cells with pleated walls and (2) cells with secondary wall thickenings. Recognition of the segregate genera Cadetia, Diplocaulobium, Epigeneium, Flickingeria, and Pseuderia apparently renders Dendrobium non-monophyletic. Dendrobium section Desmotrichum (Flickingeria) is closely related to Dendrobium section Diplocaulobium based on the shared derived foliar characters of adaxial hypodermis and abaxial fiber bundles. Dendrobium section Rhopalanthe possibly does not share these derived characters (even though they are present) and may be more closely related to the following two sections based on an abaxial hypodermis. Sections Bolbidium and Aporum of Dendrobium form a clade diagnosed by an abaxial hypodermis, water-storage cells with pleated walls in mesophyll, and anticlinally oriented endodermal cells. Abaxial fiber bundles are also present in section Aporum (at least a phenetic similarity shared with Dendrobium section Rhopalanthe and possibly derived from an immediate common ancestor). Dendrobium section Sarcopodium (Epigeneium) apparently shares the derived character of heterogeneous mesophyll with two species of Dendrobium section Dendrocoryne. Another small clade, consisting of sections Stachyobium and Phalaenanthe of Dendrobium, is diagnosed by U-thickened exodermal cells and periclinally oriented endodermal cells.Subjects--Topical Terms:
